Good Times in Sedona

I had a great time at the Sedona Plein Air Festival 2009. Painted a lot, learned a lot, sold a little and picked up an award. Here are a few photos from the week long event.

Spent a nice afternoon painting with Michael Chelsey Johnson out Vultee Arch Road. This is a shot Michael took of me on my car top painting platform. Made from a 4'x8' sheet of 3/4" inch plywood mounted on a car rack, this platform allows me to get above the bushes and trees that often obstruct the view. It also allows me to get a little different perspective. I just need to remember not to back up too far.

We spent one day painting in the ghost town of Jerome about 30 minutes from Sedona. William Wray snapped this pic of Josh Been and I enjoying the weather. It was windy, snowy and miserable, but some really good painting came out of it. Not so much for me, but Betty Carr, Jill Carver , Ken DeWaard, Tracey Frugoli and others created beautiful works that ended up at the show opening at the Le'Auberge resort gala.

At the Friday night gala I won the Artist's Choice Award for a painting titled "Stories in Stone". A cool and totally unexpected surprise! It was nice to get the nod from many of the great painters participating in the festival.

There's more than red rocks to paint around Sedona. I painted at this spot along Oak Creek, and other places, with Joshua Been. His work is truly remarkable and his enthusiasm infectious. His being around made me work harder and have more fun painting than I ever have. Nice to have met you Josh!

Drove home to enjoy Halloween night with the kids. Megan Cinderella looks ready to score some candy. The show ended at the Sedona Art Center main gallery. Visitor attendance was good, however, a lot of great paintings were still there at the close of the show.

Thanks to all the great people at the Art Center for putting on such a fun and well organized event!

PS I'll post photos of the paintings I created during the festival soon.

Your post has prompted me to write to the local Council suggesting that they organise something similar along our coast. Sounds like a great event.

It was a lot of fun. This event is similar to others like Laguna, Telluride, Easton, etc.

Good going, Bill! And I love Megan's outfit.

Hey Michael, thanks. Lots of fun painting with you. I'm glad the Honda made it out there and back! They might still be looking for us...
