I was inspired to try painting larger plein air pieces after reading a recent blog post by pastel artist and oil painter Michael Johnson (His paintings are great. He also produces how-to books and videos!) In order to pull it off I constructed a wet panel carrier made to carry two panels up to 16" x 20". I hiked out to a favorite spot near my home and painted the larger picture above - Granite Creek (16 x 16 oil on panel). Strapped to my backpack, the carrier got the panels in and out safely. I painted the smaller piece - Winter River (9 x 12 oil on panel) - that same morning before a freezing north wind forced me back to the car.
